This exquisite art form received patronage from many royals, including the Nayakas of the Vijayanagar empire, the Rajus of Tanjore and Tiruchirapalli, and the Naidus of Madurai.\n\nLike most Indian painting styles, Tanjore paintings started as murals decorating the doors and walls of homes, palaces, and temples. They typically depicted events like coronations, battle victories, and other achievements of the patron rulers. In temples and homes, the themes of these paintings revolved around religion and portraits of Hindu deities.
